The Wave
Cloud 9
One of the best surf breaks on the planet — five minutes from your villa
See It for Yourself
This Is Cloud 9
A World-Class Break
A Perfect Right-Hander Over Living Reef
Cloud 9 is a hollow, fast-barreling right-hand reef break on Siargao's east coast near Tuason Point, General Luna. It peels over shallow coral with mechanical precision — thick, glassy tubes that have earned it a place among the world's elite waves, ranked by CNN among the top surf spots on the planet.
It is the wave that turned Siargao into the Surfing Capital of the Philippines — and it breaks just five minutes from AMUNA Villas.
Know Before You Go
The Essentials
Wave Type
Hollow right-hand reef break with thick, fast barrels over shallow coral. Best suited to intermediate and advanced surfers.
Best Season
August to November, with swells peaking in September and October — the best mix of size, wind, and consistency.
Skill Level
Experienced surfers only on the reef. Beginners learn at Jacking Horse and Quiksilver, gentle sand-bottom breaks right next door.
From Your Villa
Five minutes by motorbike from AMUNA Villas. Dawn patrol, breakfast by your pool, and back on the reef by mid-morning.
The Legend
Named After a Chocolate Bar
The Discovery
In the early 1980s, surf explorers Steve Jones and Tony Arroza became the first to ride the reef at Tuason Point. The hollow right-hander stood out immediately — consistent, powerful, and completely unknown to the wider world.
The Name
When photographer John Callahan's crew surfed it in 1992, they fueled their sessions with a local no-melt Filipino chocolate bar called Cloud 9 — and simply named the wave after their daily sugar fix.
The Cover Story
Callahan's Surfer Magazine feature with pros Taylor Knox and Evan Slater revealed the wave to the world, and Siargao was never the same. Three decades later, Cloud 9 remains the beating heart of Philippine surfing.
The Boardwalk
The Most Famous View in Philippine Surfing
A long wooden boardwalk runs from the shore straight out over the reef, ending at a multi-storey viewing tower perched directly beside the lineup. It is one of the few places in the world where you can watch barrel rides unfold from a few metres away — no boat, no binoculars, no paddling required.
Destroyed by Typhoon Odette in December 2021, the boardwalk was rebuilt stronger and reopened in July 2022 — and sunset from the tower remains Siargao's essential ritual, surfer or not.
- ✓ Walk the boardwalk at sunrise for glassy, empty lineups
- ✓ Watch the pros from the tower during competition season
- ✓ Low tide reveals the reef — bring booties if you paddle out
Competition
The Siargao International Surfing Cup
Every year at the peak of the season — late September to October — the world's best surfers descend on Cloud 9 for the Siargao International Surfing Cup, a tradition spanning more than 25 years that transforms General Luna into a festival of surfing.
It is the most exciting time to be on the island — and the busiest. If you plan to visit during competition season, reserve your villa well in advance.
